Tyran,22,joined the Storm midway through last season and moved on to the list for this campaign after impressing at training with his versatility and his willingness to fill different roles. He has been named to start at hooker against the Warriors.
Wishart is the spitting image of his dad and they both hail from Gerringong in the Illawarra region, but their games are quite different, with Rod known for his play on the wing, his try-scoring and his goal-kicking,which he did with aplomb for Australia,New South Wales and the Steelers. He was named in NSW’s greatest 25 players by the Australian Rugby League in 2005.
Tyran said he had always been proud to carry such a storied name onto the field.
“I never saw dad play, but I think I’ve seen almost every game he played on DVD and I loved watching him play back in the day - the game was so different back then,” Wishart said.
“He’s obviously had a successful footy career but,the way I look at it,he was more of a role model to me in the way he fathered - he was a great dad and, honestly,if I didn’t choose to play football,he would have been fully supportive of me and that’s just the way it was.
“Now that I’m playing and I enjoy it,he has been great to me and I always go to him for advice.”
Wishart’s natural position is as a play-making halfback or five-eighth,but he could become one of their utility players, filling roles throughout the backline and even at lock or hooker.
