He appeared distraught in the rooms just before three-quarter-time as the Swans brought on their substitute,veteran Josh Kennedy,but looked to be in good spirits after the match.

“Paddy McCartin has been subbed out of the match after failing a concussion test,” the Swans tweeted early in the last quarter.

“Paddy is OK,but we will take every precaution.”

After the game,coach John Longmire said McCartin had wanted to come back on,but the doctors ruled him out.

“The docs are ultra-conservative with him,as you can understand,” Longmire said.

“He’s feeling really good. He wanted to come back on,but you can understand weren’t going to put him on afterwards even though he felt good.

“He said he was fine,he feels good now.”

The 26-year-old copped a rogue knee in the back of the head after trying to take a low mark. He was also involved in a collision earlier in the match,going back with the flight of the ball in defence.

McCartin had five intercept possessions to go with 10 disposals and six marks,and was playing an important role against Hawthorn’s tall timber before his injury.

McCartin was averaging a career-high nine kicks and 5.2 marks a game before Monday’s contest.
