“Much of the vote is yet to be counted,including significant numbers of pre-poll and postal ballots,which traditionally provide a boost to the Liberal count.”

Pocock said the count,which shows his primary vote at 22 per cent,was encouraging.

“Our campaign put people first,running on a really positive policy platform that reflected what Canberrans want for our future,” he said.

“I’ve been humbled by the support,and whatever happens in the coming days and weeks,I’m excited about the opportunity to keep speaking up for my community.”

He began to cry as he talked about the support from his husband,Ryan.

“Nobody pretends you’re not shattered after something like this,” he said.

“My contribution at this point appears to be ending. It’s challenging to face the fact. It is what it is.”

He said that looking at himself in the mirror,he could unequivocally say he did everything he could.

He would not comment on his political future when asked if this was the end of his career in parliament.

“I’m a fighter,I always have been ... I’m just looking forward to taking some down time,resting and looking to the future,” he said.

He said defying his prime minister to oppose an extradition treaty with China was one of the achievements of which he was most proud.

The Liberals were hopeful of claiming this seat back withAndrew Constance switching from state politics to contest the seat.

Constance is ahead in primary votes,but in preferences,Labor’sFiona Phillipsremains ahead by just a few hundred votes.

She suffered a 2.46 per cent swing against her but the seat remains too close to call.
