There are rumblings behind the scenes after Thursday’s developments. Prominent supporters group Hawks For Change met on Thursday night, and while they had not issued a statement at the time of deadline,it is known they are disappointed with the process.
Nankivell had initially not nominated for the role but was part of what the Hawks say was an “extensive process” to unearth the next president.
When that process could not find a candidate with the experience to take over from Kennett,Nankivell was recommended by some of the independents and board members on the nominations committee, the club said.
Nankivell then nominated for the presidency, which was unanimously backed by the board. He said the process was above board as he only came into consideration after the committee had made their findings.
The nominations committee consists of Hawthorn board members Nankivell,Katie Hudson and Anne-Marie Pellizzer, and independents Andy Gowers,Don Scott and club benefactor Geoff Harris.
Gowers, along with a group of Hawthorn figures including premiership heroes Gary Ayres,Peter Schwab and James Morrissey, had endorsed the ‘Hawks For Change’ group’s support for Ian Silk to take over from Kennett. Silk, the former AustralianSuper boss, was elected onto the board in December.
