Deputy Premier Steven Miles said that while the World Health Organisation declared anemergency overnight for the virus, there was “no cause for alarm here in Queensland”.
Acting Chief Health Officer Peter Aitken said the international declaration was a precaution.
“It was a sensible and precautionary move to make sure the international community is aware because it enhances the ability to provide surveillance so we can keep track of monkeypox,” he said.
“It’s not something to be concerned about within Queensland.
“There is only that one case in Queensland at the current stage, which has been acquired from overseas.”
They also announced that the state recorded 5800 COVID cases in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, down from 7644 the day before.
There are now more than 64,000 active cases of COVID-19 in Queensland, with more than 1000 people in hospital,12 of them on ventilators.
Aitken said the state was continuing its upward trend in positive cases.
