Discussions about Pucovski’s state of well-being had evolved out of the closing stages of the most recent of those Shield matches, against Western Australia at Junction Oval, before his decision to take a break was reached earlier this week.
Cricket Victoria’s general manager of cricket,Graham Manou, said that Pucovski’s welfare had to be the top priority for the time being, ahead of cricket.
“Player welfare is always our top priority,” he said. “We’ll continue to work with Will to ensure he gets the support and space he needs and welcome him back when he’s ready.”
Those close to Pucovski believe that issues around his mental health are not getting any worse, but instead come and go in waves that are making it difficult for him to have consistent time in the game.
Cast very much in the mould of a red-ball specialist,Pucovski played one Test for Australia against India at the SCG in January 2021 and does not have a Big Bash League contract.
