It was later revealed the 47-year-old was scheduled to appear in the County Court on sexual offence charges,with a trial date set for June.

State Nationals leader Peter Walsh said at the time the party was not aware of the charges when Mr Gilchrist was endorsed.

Labor and the Nationals did not contest the seat in Saturday’s supplementary election,with Mr Farnham winning easily against 10 other candidates.

The local construction business owner was preselected to replace retired MP Gary Blackwood.

In provisional results at 9pm on Saturday after polling closed Mr Farnham had 43.69 per cent of primary first preference votes and in the two-candidate preferred vote was on 62.56 per cent against his nearest rival Tony Wolfe on 37.44 per cent.

At the November poll,Labor claimed 56 seats to secure a third successive term in office,building on its lower house majority by one.

A win in Narracan gives the coalition 28 members in the 88-seat lower house when parliament returns in early February.
