Spokesman Chris Cox said the incident leading to Pawsey’s death was galling.

“The local bicycle advocacy group,Airport BUG,had been highlighting the need for separated bike lanes on Nudgee Road for many years, with a petition presented as recently as 2022,” Cox said.

“Brisbane City Council rejected even the basic suggestion of forbidding parking in the sporadic painted bike lanes that exist.”

Cyclists have to go around cars parked in cycling lanes on Nudgee Road. Cyclists want this problem removed by making cycle paths separate from the road network.

Cox said the council must provide more cycling infrastructure in this year’s budget.

“What we are frustrated by is the lack of investment and the lack of timely delivery of cycling infrastructure.

“Council are saying they have long-term plans to upgrade to that standard, but it is too late now and people are dying.”

Pawsey died on May 9 about 7.45am when he was riding his bike to work – south along Nudgee Road near Long Street – when he collided with a truck.

Cox wanted the council and state government to focus on new cycling infrastructure in problem zones.

“We have this thing called the Principal Cycle Network Plan, which came about as a result of the death ofRichard Pollett on Moggill Road 12 years ago,” Cox said.

“We have got this plan, but nothing is really being built. There are lovely lines on a map,but nothing is being built.”

Council Opposition Leader Jared Cassidy said the council’s inaction on cycling infrastructure was shameful.

“The shocking incident on Nudgee Road has taken a life and left family and friends shattered.”

The council has a long-term plan to add separated bike lanes on Nudgee Road between Toombul Road and Kingsford Smith Drive but Cassidy said it was warned three times last year that the road was dangerous for cyclists.

“A petition from residents to council in January 2022 called for action be taken to make Nudgee Road safer for cyclists,” he said.

“Enough is enough. Building the Kangaroo Point Bridge does not absolve the LNP of building safe cycling infrastructure in the rest of Brisbane.”

The council’s civic cabinet chair for transport Ryan Murphy said an investigation into the incident was incomplete.

“Council is fully co-operating and will review any recommendations that come as a result of this investigation,” Murphy said.

“My heart goes out to the cyclist’s family and loved ones.

“It’s unfortunate there is commentary about the accident before an investigation by authorities has been undertaken.”
