Upon arrival,officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command and paramedics were allegedly confronted by a man armed with a knife.

NSW Police said a constable shot the man,who is now at St Vincent’s Hospital in a stable condition.

Police established a crime scene,and a number of residential streets were temporarily closed.

Police have opened a critical incident investigation,to be led by a team from Leichhardt Police Area Command,which will look at the entire incident including the shooting.

NSW Police said the investigation will be subject to an independent review.
