However,the Dragons were yet to register his contract when he had begun training with his new teammates last week.

NRL rules allow for a contract to be registered within five days of it being announced publicly by the club. When Volkman took the paddock at the Dragons,it became clear that he was still struggling with the effects of a shoulder reconstruction in 2022.

The Dragons won’t register his one-year deal,leaving the 21-year-old’s immediate future uncertain given he was officially released by the Warriors before Christmas.

Volkman was signed as cover by coach Flanagan given Talatau Amone’s $500,000 deal was deregistered by the NRL for his role in a rooftop hammer attack on a tradie in Wollongong.

The Dragons have ample salary cap space to spend in 2024 and are in the market for at least one more spine player,albeit in a market short on exactly that.

Flanagan had been bullish about targeting marquee players to lead his rebuild of the joint-venture,identifying key transfer targets like Addin Fonua-Blake,Tom Dearden,Joey Manu,Jack Welsby,Heilum Luki and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki in the media.

He has sincerevised that strategy,telling this masthead recently:“I’m going to pull my head in a bit … I don’t want to go into those conversations as much now because we’re putting our head out there to get punched again[when a signing is missed].”

The Dragons have also extended Cody Ramsey for 2025 in a deal that doesn’t count towards the club’s salary cap or take up a top-30 spot as he recovers from a career-threatening bowel condition.
