“I can’t tell you what I said when he missed and I was watching him[Storm Boy] most of the way,” Bott said. “It was clear he wasn’t going to get there, and then they hit the post and I realised Lady Of Camelot won it. That was the only time I really saw her.
“It is a bit bittersweet but we have the Golden Slipper and that’s what counts.”
There would have been a $25 million bonus if Storm Boy had won the Golden Slipper as a stallion, hence all the attention as one of six runners for the Waterhouse-Bott stable.
Blake Shinn had to pick his runs on Lady Of Camelot ($6.50) in the straight and was left with only $41 outsider Coleman left to catch in the final 100m. It took until the final few bounds for Lady Of Camelot to find the front. She won by a head with Storm Boy ($2.60fav) bravely running into third 1½ lengths away.
“It was over for[Storm Boy] when the gates opened,” said Waterhouse, who watched from the Southern Highlands.
“You were watching and hoping from there. Then you see the filly hitting the front and you go ‘yes!’”
