Prince Harry has made his first comments on the death of his grandmother, following the Queen’s death four days ago.
Harry said in a posted on his Archewell website that the final parting from his “granny” brought with it “great sadness,” but that he was “forever grateful” for their “first meetings.”
“Fom my earliest childhood memories with you,to meeting you for the first time as my Commander-in-Chief,to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren,I cherish these times shared with you,and the many other special moments in between,” Harry said.
“You are already sorely missed, not just by us,but by the world over.
“And as it comes to first meetings,we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III,” he said.
Harry thanked the Queen for her commitment to service, her sound advice and infectious smile and said that “we,too, smile knowing that you and grandpa are reunited now,and both together in peace.”
Harry has had strained relations with his family since he and wife Meghan quit the institution and moved to America, where they gave a tell-all interview to Oprah, accusing an unnamed member of the royal family of racism.
But he and Meghan made a surprise joint appearance at Windsor Castle on the weekend with the Prince and Princess of Wales,William and Kate, designed to show a truce had been struck,at least for the period of mourning.
