Ms Berejiklian made a public statement on Friday afternoon announcing her resignation as premier.

“Resigning at this time is against every instinct of my well-being ... I love my job and serving the community, but I have been given no option following the statement,” she said.

Ms Berejiklian was embroiled in the ICAC scandal in October 2020,when she revealed to the ICAC that she was in a “close personal relationship” with Mr Maguire for years, including after he was forced to quit Parliament.

The inquiry heard taped phone calls between Ms Berejiklian and Mr Maguire during their five-year secret relationship.

It heard Ms Berejiklian’s relationship with the former Wagga Wagga MP began in 2014 or 2015 and continued even after she asked for Mr Maguire’s resignation in 2018.

The ICAC confirmed earlier this year it would extend operation Keppel, which was set up to investigate Mr Maguire, who allegedly used his position in Parliament to further his business dealings.

A $5 million state government grant was handed to a gun club in Mr Maguire’s electorate in 2017 while Ms Berejiklian was treasurer.

Ms Berejiklian in August said all proper processes were followed when questioned about the matter at a press conference.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro issued a statement on Friday afternoon wishing Ms Berejiklian well for the future and adding that “everyone has the right to defend their name”.

“I have served as the Deputy Premier to Gladys Berejiklian for almost five years and in that time she has led this State through some of its darkest days,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Any speculation regarding Liberal Party leadership remains an issue for the Liberal Party.”
