Neighbour arrested after'deliberately lit'house fire leaves man dead

A man has been killed and his neighbour arrested after what police have called a"deliberately lit"house fire on the NSW South Coast late on Friday.

Emergency services responded to reports of a break-in and fire at a home on Leonard Street in Bomaderry,north of Nowra,about 10.40pm.

A 49-year-old man has died after his house was allegedly torched in Bombaderry,with a neighbour arrested.

The home was well alight when police officers and Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived,and firefighters pulled one man unresponsive from the home.

Despite CPR attempts by paramedics,49-year-old Cameron Johnston died at the scene. Another man was able to flee the home and was uninjured.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze – but not before it destroyed the home and a nearby vehicle.

Officers from the South Coast Police District established a crime scene,which was examined by specialist forensic police.

In a statement on Saturday afternoon,police described the fire as"deliberately lit".

About 12.35pm,officers arrested a 26-year-old man at a home on the same street as the burned-down house.

He was taken to Nowra police station and is assisting with inquiries.
