Nine-year-old in pyjamas shot by man allegedly ‘lying in wait’

One man is in custody and a manhunt is under way for another after a nine-year-old girl in her pyjamas was shot outside her family home in Sydney’s south on Friday night.

The girl, her mother and two siblings were unpacking groceries at their home on Queens Road in Connells Point just before 6pm when a man allegedly got out of a stolen BMW with cloned number plates that had been “lying in wait” and “let several shots go from a firearm in the direction of the house towards this family,” State Crime Command’s director, detective acting chief superintendent Grant Taylor said on Saturday.

Police are investigating links to Sydney’s underworld after a young girl was shot in the hip.

“It was parked some 100 metres up the road and made its way closer when the family arrived.”

It was abundantly clear that the girl was a child,he said.

“The[alleged shooter] was very close to that child in pyjamas. I think it’d be very difficult to mistake that individual for an adult.”

The primary school student was rushed to hospital with a police escort, where she underwent internal surgery and is now in a stable condition.

Asked if the shooting was targeted, detective superintendent Taylor said:“What we will say is that the premises we believe was most definitely the intended target. An individual at that premises is known to us. Whether the children were the intended[target] or not is yet to be determined.”

The individual known to police was not home at the time,he said.

Several minutes after the shooting, the black BMW was set alight on Annette Street in nearby Oatley.

Police arrested Mahmoud Rizk,34,in Oatley, charging him with shooting with intent to murder.

Police addressed the media after a nine-year-old girl was injured following a public place shooting in Sydney’s west overnight.

Rizk,of Pendle Hill, was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday. His matter is listed for Downing Centre Local Court on July 14.

A manhunt for another man continues, detective superintendent Taylor said.

Police have also seized a stolen red Mini Cooper, which investigators believe had been parked there for several days in anticipation of the shooting, from Oatley. It is now undergoing forensic testing.

This is the second public place shooting on Queens Road since November last year, although detectives are yet to establish whether the two incidents are linked.

“That shooting was connected to this premise where the shooting took place last night. In regards to whether that shooting had anything to do with[Friday’s] shooting,it’s too early to determine.

“Suffice to say that there’s some ongoing dispute or altercation. That’s our job to determine exactly what that is.”

Police believe the latest shooting is not connected to the spate of fatal shootings that have felled 14 organised crime figures in the past two years, most recently formerLone Wolf Yusuf Nazlioglu, who was last week executed in the parking garage of his Rhodes unit complex.

“This is a separate incident. Although it may be organised crime related or related to criminal activity,it’s not related to the activities of the current shooting murders that are under Taskforce Erebus.

“It is connected,we believe,to criminal networks that are known to us.”
