The Matildas showed us there are no limits
LearnModernMoney A large cohort of future women will be fitter, faster and vastly more aware that there are no limits as to what they can achieve, thanks to these great women.
kimba The Matildas will no doubt be feeling immeasurable disappointment.
I feel exhilaration and pride for what we achieved and the way in which they did it. I am not a great fan of soccer but I feel I have witnessed and enjoyed one of the greatest sporting competitions of my life and will remember this with pride and warmth. Thank you kindly for the ride,Tillies.
Coops Tremendous tournament. Properly good football played throughout by so many teams. All of them should be proud. Especially our girls who dug deep till the end, despite home pressure.
Optimist They did us proud. They shut up all the naysayers, the other football codes, and the cynics. Well done,Matildas!
An extraordinary moment from a true champion
Liz White Only the best players can score like that. She was just so determined to score for her country. What a competitor.
Wanabe She’s wonderful to watch. Another extraordinary moment from a true champion.
Middle-aged Mama The England team was tightly controlled and made the most of their chances but what a glorious goal this was indeed.
Anne Cook Congratulations to all the players, both sides. Well done!
Binks Whatever team you were supporting last night (I was supporting England),that was a wonderful goal. You never forget moments like that – how the pace, skill and composure of one person can change a game in a single movement. Well played Sam and the entire Maltidas team.
Meredith Williams,NorthmeadThank you,Matildas. What you’ve done for Australian sport is pure gold.
Matildas lost the game, but won over the country
Lucinda It’s been a beautiful ride. Thank you,Matildas. England has one million female football participants from which to draw their team. Maybe now, after this epic journey to the semis, our numbers will soar and young girls across Australia will join sporting teams and stay in sporting teams. Bravo Matildas for changing the landscape entirely.
southcoastboy Matildas were good but not great. Either way,it was fantastic to watch their progress (and be deafened in one ear by my soccer-mad daughter each game) and it does bode well for the future – once grassroots funding and proper development programs are in place.
EH Just imagine how well we would go if governments supported football the way they do the NRL or ARL.
A. Balance Matildas were great,Poms were just that little better. Nothing to complain about.
olivier Does Australia really get it now? And why has it taken so long? Let’s see. Football has been here for decades and overlooked by the media and the majority of sports fans in favour of union,AFL and, worst of all, bloody league.
flaggman It will be interesting to see what,if any, momentum happens.
Tonyg Paris Olympics next year. We’ll be in the mix again, with more big match experience and hopefully a coach who knows how to use subs across a tournament.
Brian Kidd,Mt Waverley (Vic)They may have lost the game but the Matildas have won over the country.
Beaten by a better team, gracious in defeat
traveller Full credit to the Matildas as they’ve been superb and lifted the whole country. But to watch the first 15 minutes of the match I think that England played very rough and were targeting Kerr. They knew she’d been injured and not played full games before.
RM Well done,Matildas. You gave your all and were gracious in defeat. It’s hard to begrudge England. They were the better team after all. But the crowing by the British media, some of it sadly reproduced on Australian websites,is tough to stomach. Go Spain.
Col Go Spain!
Glenn Newton If the Matildas had been able to defend as well as they did against Canada the outcome might have been radically different. But that’s football.
paul In the end Australia was beaten by a better team – the best female athletes playing the national sport. But that goal from Sam Kerr – absolutely seared into my mind for life.
Deborah Wilson,Allambie Heights Thank you,Matildas. You have united us.
Genevieve Milton,Dulwich HillWhile they may have lost the match, the Matildas are winners. They highlighted women’s sports in magnificent style, like no other sport has achieved. The next World Cup is only four years away.
