This time, what caught my eye was a cropped,faux-fur and impossibly soft lime-green jacket. It was glorious, but where would I wear neon green fur in black-clad Melbourne? I kept circling back to it and, with encouragement from my friend, decided to try it on.
I took off my black leather trench and chucked the green fur over a cream blouse, tucked into my new favourite pair of baggy,high-waisted black jeans with white stitching. And did itwork, injecting a dose of sunshine into my otherwise black-and-white ensemble.
I got it in the end,but I have to admit I do worry it will be,well,a bit bright in a city that is best known for its head-to-toe funereal glory. Sure,I was wary about standing out at my next serious cultural event, but dare I say it Melbourne,it’s time you got over wearing black.
I contact Melbourne-based personal stylist Sally Mackinnon and ask her what she thinks.
“After two years of being in and out of lockdowns,it’s time for Melburnians to celebrate and not dress like they’re in mourning,” Mackinnon says. “Dopamine dressing is in,and it’s the ultimate feel-good formula, especially after two years in trackie pants.”
Dopamine dressing – opting for bright colours from head to toe to improve one’s mood – is 2022’s biggest trend,as we saw on the catwalks last week at Australian Fashion Week in Sydney.
