Mr Minns, however, used his maiden speech to criticise the current role of working people inside the Australian Labor Party.
According to Mr Minns, union members should have less of a say inside the party. He said:"That means taking steps to reduce union control of the floor of our conference, and increasing representation of ordinary members of our party who have more diverse voices."
Seriously,if anyone, including Mr Minns, thinks that the 18,000 members of NSW Labor comprise more"diverse voices"than the 600,000 union members in this state then they couldn't haven'tâ met many union members.
If people think that unions are like the NSW Parliament â largely made up of wealthy middle class white men â they are seriously mistaken.
It is extremely concerning that anyone can be so brutally disconnected with the reality of our modern workforce.
The reality is that unions are far more diverse than the shrinking network of local ALP branches.
While the NSW Labor membership is increasingly dominated by retirees, student activists and political insiders, unions represent people of all types and of all backgrounds.
Members of the Rail,Tram and Bus Union for example, are as diverse a group of people as you would find anywhere.
And we're not an isolated case â attend any meeting of the many other unions in Australia, and you will see that those organisations are just as diverse as ours.
Of course, bagging union members has now become fashionable in certain corners of the Labor Party.
I have no doubt that some will be high-fiving each other in parliamentary corridors about the fact that a union boss has"taken the bait"to engage in this nauseating public debate about the nexus between labour and Labor.
But instead of insulting union members, and pretending that the Labor Party would be better off without the labour movement,MPs should be trying to re-connect with the people who were once the bedrock of the ALP's political success.
The NSW Labor Conference is coming up later in the year, and our union will be raising the issue of introducing real-life work experience for MPs.
Albert Einstein said that any fool can know, but the point is to understand.
Labor needs more politicians who understand, and that's why they need to make sure new MPs get an education in the values, challenges and aspirations of everyday working people.
