Host Kieran Gilbert noted the seat of Wentworth has never elected a Labor member in its 120-year history. Would Spender, daughter of a Liberal MP,really side with the ALP?
“I haven’t made up my mind. It depends what happens at the negotiating table on the day,” said Spender. “I’m open to work with either side of government.”
That wasn’t good enough for Sharma. “If you’re not being upfront with the electorate now and telling them which party you’re going to support,I think you’re being dishonest with them. I think you owe it to the public to tell them.”
After being reminded independent MP for Warringah Zali Steggall had suggested she would find it easier to support a Coalition government if Scott Morrison were not at the helm,Spender said it was policy she cared about, not who was leading the party.
“I’ve never met Scott Morrison,I’ve never had any dealings with him,” she said.
Sharma - a so-called ‘moderate Liberal’ who crossed the floor two months ago to support ending religious schools’ right to discriminate against LGBTQ students - said he would vote against his party again to honour any commitments he makes during this campaign.
But it was not something he would do lightly. “I’m running as a Liberal candidate. You should expect me to behave as a Liberal member of parliament,” Sharma said.
