The state’s transport agency has awarded the $38.9 million contract to build the three-metre wide path from the bridge into Bradfield Park at Milsons Point to construction company Arenco.
Transport for NSW’s deputy secretary of cities and active transport,Anna Bradley, said on Tuesday the “critical piece of infrastructure” would make the cycling route more accessible for young families, the elderly and those who were less able to carry a push-bike or e-bike up 55 stairs.
“The[Harbour] Bridge continues to evolve to meet the needs of the people of Sydney, and we’re thrilled that we’re moving closer to the next iteration – a new cycleway ramp on the northern side.”

Plans to build the ramp to bypass 55 stairs at the northern end of the bridge have stoked tensions between cycling enthusiasts and residents since the 1980s.
A cohort of local critics had argued the chosen “linear” structure for the ramp wouldcompromise the bridge’s heritage and encroach on Bradfield Park. Cycling enthusiasts, who have had to lug their bikes up or down the steps for years, have lobbied for a more accessible route.
Transport for NSW said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that the cost of building the multimillion-dollar cycleway was “similar to a train station accessibility upgrade”.
