Liberals need quotas says Pyne

Christopher Pynehas said the Liberal party is going to have to look at adopting quotas to get more women into Parliament.

Female teal independents clinched key Liberal seats including Kooyong,Goldstein,Warringah,Mackellar,North Sydney and Wentworth.

Pyne told 7 there was a clear message from the Liberals’ defeat.

“The Liberal Party can’t afford to lose women. We don’t have enough women,” Pyne said.

“We’re going to have to start looking at quotas. We’re going to have to start facing the reality.”

”You heard it here first,it’s a swear word for the Liberal Party” said Labor Senator and fellow panellistKaty Gallagher quipped.

Plibersek on Labor victory:“a win is a win is a win”

ByLatika Bourke

Labor frontbencherTanya Pliberseksays a win is a win, despite Labor’s weakened primary vote at this election.

Labor’s primary is two per cent lower than it was at the last election as voters who rejectedScott Morrison favoured the Greens and independents.

But Plibersek told the ABC that “a win is a win is a win”.

“I don’t think anybody is complaining about the primary vote ... I think this is a really strong signal that people in city areas,in regional communities, right across Australia are up for strong action on climate change.”

“Tonight the Australian people have voted for change,” he said. “I am humbled by this victory and I am honoured to be given this opportunity to serve as the 31st prime minister of Australia.

“My Labor team will work every day to bring Australians together and I will lead a government worthy of the people of Australia.”

He saysScott Morrison “graciously” wished him well and thanked the outgoing prime minister for his service.

He again reprised his background as a son of a single mother and said it said something about Australia that he could stand before supporters as the next prime minister of Australia.

“Every parent wants more for the next generation than they had ... and I hope that my journey in life inspires Australians to reach for the stars.”

He was continually interrupted by rowdy Labor supporters and called for order in the room.

“I intend to run an orderly government and it starts here,so behave,” he ordered.

“I want to bring Australians together,I want to seek our common purpose and promote unity and optimism, not fear and division.”

“No one gets here by themselves and I wouldn’t be standing here tonight without the support and hard work of so many people,” he said, singling out Senator Wong and deputy Labor leaderRichard Marles.

He said he would be sworn in on Monday morning so he and the foreign minister could travel to the Quad Leaders’ meeting in Tokyo.

“And I want the leaders of the economic team to start work as well,” he said.

He thanked the “true believers” of the Labor Party and said the parliamentary party stood on their shoulders.

“I said during the campaign that I’ve been underestimated my whole life and, while that this true,I’ve also been lifted up by others who saw something in me.

“I am here not to occupy the space but to make a positive difference every day,” he said.

He thanked his girlfriend,Jodie, for coming into his life and sharing the journey.

She said,“I love you”,and they shared a kiss on the cheek.

Albanese then thanked his “proudest achievement”,son Nathan,21,and his ex-wife,Carmel Tebbutt.

He said he hoped people in public housing were watching because it showed that “in Australia, the doors of opportunity are open to us all and like every other Labor government we’ll just widen that door a bit more”.

“Friends,we have made history tonight and tomorrow, together we begin the work of building a better future,” he said.

Liberal Minister Ken Wyatt loses Hasluck

BySarah Brookes

Indigenous Affairs MinisterKen Wyatthas lost his West Australian seat of Hasluck.

A small crowd of supporters gathered at his election night event at the Crooked Spire in Midland but he was not expected to arrive until later in the evening.

Hasluck was one of three seats Labor set its sights on in WA that was held by the Liberals by less than six per cent.

Labor’s candidate for the seat, Tania Lawrence, said she was very proud to be able to work with an experienced Labor team in parliament.

“People have been saying to me,they’re angry, they’re frustrated. They’ve expressed all their major issues. And I feel that Labor has listened. And our policies have responded to what they’ve said to me.”

Wyatt had held the seat since 2010.
